Bev Doolittle THE FOREST HAS EYES
book by Elise Maclay
Parents and teachers have been using Bevs books for years to help youngsters
carefully examine an image for its hidden surprises. From all of their letters it was
clear that we should put together a book just for children, and we have!
The Forest Has Eyes is another collaboration between Bev and author Elise Maclay. They
combine the most sought after Doolittle images with native American myth-inspired stories
that ask children to look, to see, to discover what is hiding in the picture.
The Forest Has Eyes is a "Do you see what I see?" kind of bookan
interactive words-and-pictures game that parents can play with their children.
In the course of creating this book the publisher came across a vintage image of Bevs that they
thought captured the spirit of The Forest Has Eyes, and Bev agreed. She explains the story behind the image:
"One can only imagine what life must be like for a chipmunk," she muses,
"especially when his front door has been trod upon by a huge grizzly
bear. So whats a tiny chipmunk to do? Maybe bark out a protest to such a thoughtless
gesture, and then rearrange his entrance? From a human point of view the title No Respect
seems an appropriate one" &nsp; And respect for the natural world is one of the
messages Bevs paintings illuminate in this new book.
For collectors, the significance of No Respect is that , like Escape by a Hare, it is an
example of her early workone of the first steps toward hidden or camouflaged images
which became her trademark. She was one of the first wildlife artists to
"humanize" her subjectsto add humor, whimsy, a play on words, and explore
beyond traditional "portrait" wildlife paintings. This early piece gives us a
different way to look at animals and celebrates the things we dont see at first,
like the hidden beauty of nature that comes from closer examination. Her movement toward
incorporating the natural world-centered spirituality of the Native Americans started to
become apparent here.
The Forest Has Eyes will be accompanied by the unique image, which is meticulously printed
on a deckled, richly-textured, Strathmore cotton paper. No Respect includes a remarque
that will be printed in the margin, and its small size allows Doolittle collectors to find
room for it in their collections.
The newest Doolittle print and book release is connected to a cause that she holds near
and dearthe protection of bears. Bev tells us: "Im pleased to announce
that partial proceeds from this special offering will benefit the Yellowstone Grizzly
Foundation, in Wyoming, and the Louisiana Black Bear Conservation Committee.
