It is 1885 on the sunlit plains. Four volunteer Shoshoni Indians await their scouting orders wearing a mix of cavalry uniforms and traditional Native American garments.  "The painting shows the transition—an attempt at assimilation—from one culture to another," Terpning explains. "Of course it never worked."
