In 1840, a Comanche army of nearly 1,000 warriors, women and boys marched
out toward the Gulf of Mexico, raiding and looting as they traveled. In
Linnville at Lacavca Bay, the raiders broke into a warehouse full of merchandise.
Instead of being shipped to San Antonio, the bright hats parasols and sashes
became the Indians' colorful booty. Satisfied with their garish treasure,
the Comanches headed back north.
The artist portrays the Comanche spoilers proudly marching across the
dry plain, bedecked in their carnival-colored plunder and kicking up a
great cloud of dust.
Comanche Spoilers has a comic air, but there is tragedy in store
for the Comanche. An army of vengeful Texans waiting at Plum Creek will
be alerted to the Indians' presence by the dust cloud. When the Texans
open fire and charge, many of the Comanches will be captured; eighty will
die in the attack and the rest of the Comanche army will be scattered.
There is tragedy to come, but for the moment there is victory.
Terpning's Comanche Spoilers is an historical drama recaptured
by a master of Western Art.
